Informatie over de uitvoerende(n)

Farinelli's Ground is a flexible group composed of Early Music specialists from diverse musical and cultural backgrounds. All the performers are either current students or alumni from the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. The individual performers in the group have performed with or directed ensembles throughout the world. The group hopes to use its combined years of knowledge and experience in historical performance to produce performances that engage, interest and entertain its audiences.

John Ma is a musician specialising in Early Music living in The Netherlands.  As a flexible freelancer, he plays Violin, Viola and Viola d'amore in various styles and time periods from Western Art Music. He completed his M.Perf. at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music studying Baroque Violin and Viola with Anna McDonald, finished his B.Mus. (1st Class Honours, CSM) and B.Sc. (National Undergraduate Scholar, Physics and Theoretical Physics, ANU) in 2002 and in 2003 he was a full scholarship holder at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne. In 2009, he completed his training in Early Music at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag with Pavlo Beznosiuk. As an able modern and period instrument player, John has appeared with various groups including Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (UK, Jerwood Scholar 2010), Pinchgut Opera (AUS), Academia Montis Regalis (IT), Australian Brandenburg Orchestra (AUS), Helsinki Baroque Orchestra (FIN), B'Rock (BG), Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (AUS), Orchestra Victoria (AUS), Sinfonia Australis (AUS), Aark New Music Ensemble (AUS) and  Young Australian Concert Artists (AUS).

Rie Kimura began to study baroque violin in Japan with Keiko Watanabe and Paul Hererra in 2002. In 2004, she moved to Amsterdam to study with Lucy van Dael at the Amsterdam Conservatory. She studied ensemble playing with Raul Moncada (Mexico). She also took lessons with Sayuri Yamagata in The Netherlands.  She has played solos in concerts with Lucy van Dael, and plays and records regularly as a member of De Nederlandse Bachvereniging, Musica Amphion, Bach Collegium Japan, and Orchestra Libera Classica.  In 2008 she won the top prize (2nd) in the Yamanashi Early Music competition (Japan).  In 2009, together with Ensemble Diamanté, she won the 2nd prize in the Bruges International Competition and also the audience prize in Van Wassenaer Early Music Competition. In 2010, she won the top prize (2nd) and also the public prize in Premio Bonporti competition in Rovereto, Italy.

Robert Smith werd geboren in Yorkshire en ging in Wales naar de universiteit. Daarna vertrok hij naar Nederland om barokcello te studeren bij Wouter Möller, Jaap ter Linden en aansluitend bij Viola de Hoog. Hij was eerste cellist van het European Union Baroque Orchestra in 2005/6, onder leiding van o.a. Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Rachel Podger en Christophe Coin. Bob speelt nu in verschillende ensembles zoals Les Eléments (Franse barok cantates), Barok Opera Amsterdam (Purcell Muziektheater) en Ensemble Diamanté. Hij studeert viola da gamba bij Mieneke van der Velden en gaat daarnaast vaak naar Basel, Zwitserland, voor les bij Paolo Pandolfo. Dit jaar heeft hij de 2e prijs gewonnen in de 4e Internationaler Solistenwettbewerb für Alte Musik 2010 ter Brunnenthal in Oostenrijk. Vorig jaar heeft Robert, samen met Ensemble Diamanté, prijzen gewonnen in het Musica Antica Concours ter Brugge (2e) en het Van Wassenaer Councours, Amsterdam (3e  en Publieksprijs). In 2005 won hij een geldprijs van het Countess of Munster Musical Trust.

Luitist Earl Christy is geboren in de Verenigde Staten. Hij studeerde bij Edward Martin en Nigel North aan de Universiteit van Indiana; in Milaan bij Paul Beier en in Den Haag bij Toyohiko Satoh, aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium, waar hij zijn Bachelor- en Master diploma behaalde. Earl Christy is vooral actief in het herontdekken van lang verwaarloosde muziek voor de barokluit. Als solist trad hij op in verschillende landen van Europa en Noord Amerika. Ook op Festivals, zoals het Oude Muziek Festival te Utrecht. Ook als componist voor zijn instrument, is Christy actief. Zijn CD "Neue Lautenfrüchte", werd door de internationale pers enthousiast ontvangen. Hij woont momenteel in Nederland.
